Early Days:


The IBM 1401 was a mainframe computer of the second generation. It was a massive and costly machine, but it was extremely powerful for the time. The IBM 1401 was used to handle data from the 1971 population census, the first time a computer was utilized for this purpose in Nepal.


The government also founded the National Computer Centre (NCC) in the 1970s, which was in charge of promoting and growing computer use throughout Nepal. The NCC provided computer programming and operation instruction, as well as assistance in the development of Nepali language software.

Adoption of Internet:


IIn 1995, the Internet was initially established in Nepal. However, Internet connectivity did not become generally available for several years. By the early 2000s, Internet cafes had become popular in Nepal, and individuals began to utilize the Internet for a variety of purposes, including communication, education, and entertainment.

The advent of the Internet has a significant impact on Nepal's development. It enabled people in Nepal to communicate with people all over the world and gain access to previously unattainable information and resources.   • 2018BS census counting tool nearly 6 years 6 months using machine called FACT. (Total population 96 lakh)
  • HMG bought 2nd generation computer firstly IBM 1401 on rent Rs 1 lakh 25 thousands per month) in 2028BS.
  • It took 1 year 7 months and 15 days to count 1 crore 12.5 lakh population.
  • Electronic Data Processing Centre of Nepal was established in 2031 BS.
  • After six months it named NCC (National Computer Centre).
  • In 2038BS fourth generation computer named ICL 2950.10 was imported from England in 20 lakh American dollars. It was funded by UNDP.
  • Many private IT Company and consultancy started working in Nepal.
  • First time internet facility provided by private company Mercantile communication in 1995AD
  • Telecommunication act was issued in 1997 AD.
  • In 2057 BS IT Policy of Nepal was established.
  • It Policy of Nepal was revised in 2067BS and 2072 BS respectively.
  • Cyber Law of Nepal was established in 2061BS
  • Electronic Transaction Act was established in 2063 BS.
  • CAN (Computer Association of Nepal) was established in 1992 AD in Nepal.
  • School, colleges, business organizations, communication centers, ticket counters etc. are using computers.
  • Nepal government has started information center in most of the village development committee, e-governance, GIS mapping etc.
  • The election commission of Nepal also started electronic voting system.
